(Senior) Computational Scientist / Translational Sciences (f/m/d)

Position Summary:
Founded in 2020, mbiomics GmbH aims to revolutionize the treatment of diseases through innovative microbiome-based therapeutics. Our holistic TechBio platform combines proprietary analytics and cutting-edge data science to push the boundaries of live bacterial product (LBP) development.
This position in mbiomics’ Research team will be executing in scientific teams to deliver on mbiomics’ therapeutic and diagnostic development goals. This Research Scientist provides solutions using expert knowledge of computational biology and the microbiome and will proactively and independently identify opportunities for platform de-risking, development, and innovation. This Scientist will lead cross-functional projects, communicating clearly with teammates, leadership, and other stakeholders about results, plans and risks.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Contribute to advancing the company’s research and development objectives by executing analyses or large heterogenous biological datasets (e.g., metagenomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, other in vitro assays) through effective use of multivariable statistics and machine learning. Importantly, this includes the development and validation of novel algorithms as opposed to reliance on off-the-shelf workflows.
- Analyze human biomarker and ‘omics data from multiple indications as part of a translational research objectives to inform therapeutics design, pharmacology, biomarker, and translational strategies, and clinical development.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners in interdisciplinary teams and represent Computational Science as the primary technical and/or scientific expert.
- Communicate results effectively to internal and external stakeholders, including investor communications and research publications
- Clearly communicate project plans, risks, rationale for decision-making and results. Communicate early on resources required for project completion and changes in project plans, and provide frequent progress updates
- Work effectively as part of a multifunctional team in support of a commercially viable therapeutics discovery platform
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Proven ability to design and validate novel computational algorithms and/or analysis methods as opposed to solely using off-the-shelf tools.
- Proficiency in algorithm design, implementation and deployment using Python or R, and Unix
- Proven expertise in analysis of high-throughput datasets from one or more of: genomics/ transcriptomics of microbial or host systems, metabolomics, immunology, and genetics
- Proficiency with complex data visualization
- Ability to work independently, managing time and multiple projects with multiple stakeholders
- Strong organizational and communications skills as required for organizing and leading projects or working group teams
- Eagerness to work collaboratively in a team and to both give and receive feedback to teammates
- Ability to perform complex analyses in a time sensitive fashion. Ability to prioritize a variety of objectives

- Desire to pursue professional development by acquiring new skills, presenting work at internal and external venues, and acting on feedback
Preferred Skills/Abilities:
- Experience with one of the cloud computing platforms
- Proven expertise in statistical analysis of microbial communities
- Experience with a workflow manager e.g. Nextflow
- Proven experience with clinical-stage companies in the regulated space such as IND preparation, Biomarker discovery, and assay qualification.
- Experience with immunological datasets and assays such as flow cytometry or organoids.
Education and Experience
- PhD in computational biology or a related field
- Minimum 1 years post-PhD experience in one or more of: microbiome, microbial genomics, genomics, evolution, or ecology
- Minimum 1 year experience leading a multi-team member project in an industry environment
- Minimum 1 year experience as computational lead of a scientific research project
