Job description
ATMOS Space Cargo is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of aerospace-grade hardware. This is a 1-year fixed-term role and a great opportunity for an early-career engineer who wants to gain hands-on experience across the full hardware development cycle, from concept and design to assembly, testing, and verification.
In this role, you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and contribute directly to the development of mechanical solutions for space logistics in a fast-paced and highly technical environment.
Key responsibilities
- You will support the development and refinement of mechanical designs from concept through production, taking into account space-qualification requirements
- You will create and update detailed 3D CAD models and technical drawings for manufacturing and assembly, preferably in SolidWorks
- You will contribute to the design, analysis, and optimisation of structures, mechanisms, and mechanical interfaces with regard to performance, durability, and mass efficiency
- You will support the selection of materials, components, and manufacturing methods in line with aerospace requirements and environmental constraints
- You will assist in prototype builds, assembly, integration activities, and test campaigns
- You will support the execution and documentation of mechanical, structural, and environmental tests, including vibration, thermal cycling, and fit checks
- You will work closely with internal teams such as systems, avionics, and propulsion to support the integration of mechanical subsystems
- You will support technical coordination with suppliers and external partners to clarify specifications and help ensure component quality and compliance
- You will contribute to the continuous improvement of existing designs with regard to performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost efficiency
- You will help ensure traceability, technical documentation, and compliance with safety, aerospace, and certification-related requirements
Profile required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- First professional experience in mechanical design through internships, working student roles, university projects, or an entry-level engineering position
- Good knowledge of 3D CAD modelling and technical drawing; experience with SolidWorks is a strong plus
- Initial hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, prototype development, or testing is an advantage
- Solid understanding of mechanical structures, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Interest in designing hardware for demanding environments, including vibration, thermal loads, and other challenging operating conditions
- Ability to understand technical requirements and translate them into practical and robust mechanical designs
- Strong written and spoken English; German is a strong plus
- Structured and proactive way of working, with strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on mindset
Please note that we can only consider applicants who already have a valid right to work in the EU.
Company description
ATMOS was founded as a European company built on the values of freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and human rights. We are committed to protect these values by making our technology available to others who share the same values, strengthening infrastructure and innovation for prosperity on Earth.
Our team is multinational and diverse, with offices in Lichtenau and Strasbourg. We work in a collegial, hands-on culture where people support each other, take ownership, and keep learning every day. Motivation for the mission comes first — building spacecraft is not a nine-to-five pursuit. We align the mission, the team, and the individual in mutual dependence. This principle shapes our work environment where exceptional people, as committed as they are competent, can grow and contribute to a mission that matters.
